Thin Hair Hacks. Do They Really Work?

When I was younger my hair was thick. Down to my hips, wavy and thick. When I hit the age of twelve all this vanished. My hair started to thin out and even though the length remained the same, it definitely did not look it. So, over the last few years I have had to adapt to this new hair texture and have learnt a couple of tricks through lots of trial and error. I'm here to share these trials and errors with you today. The image below was taking just as my hair was beginning to really thin out. After this the ends started to get really bad and I decided to get the chop (images later in the post!)

Tip #1: Snip-Snip!
Every post that comes up when you type "thin hairstyles" into the search bar features an image (or a million) of a classic bob hairstyle. After my hair thinned out and lost volume I decided to make the transformation to a shorter do. I loved it. Although my hair wasn't any thicker, it looked it. It also felt bouncy and like nothing was weighing it down. I'm no hairdresser, but I think the reasoning is that there's not a lot of extra weight pulling the hair down, resulting in flattened roots.
Overall, I would rate this Thin Hair Hack a 4.5/5 stars. It's missing the half a star only because getting the chop is a big and final decision and short hair is not for everyone, meaning it can't be of benefit to everyone.
Tip #2: Using shampoo and conditioner aimed at thin hair.
This hack is iffy, for lack of a better word. It really depends on the hair of the individual and the product used. I've used many shampoo's and conditioner's that have the words "voluminous'' and ''lifting'' in the name and have received nothing of the sorts. Sometimes I've received an opposite effect and have walked around with hair slicked to my head and others there has been no noticeable difference at all. There is only one shampoo and conditioner I've used that has worked quite well in giving the illusion of thicker hair. This is the Organix Thick and Full Shampoo and conditioner. I absolutely love this product but only use it on special occasions and not for regular use as it is expensive. Personally, I would rate this specific product a 5/5 stars, but factor in the price it would drop back down to 3.5, perhaps 4/5 as it is not affordable. That may be only me as a university student talking but I would not be able to restock this product as frequently as needed.
I would rate this whole hack, not just the product I spoke about, as 2.5/5 because it is just so difficult to find one that actually works for you and more often than not you're paying for the exact same results a regular, cheaper product would give you.

Tip #3: Change your part.
This is a pretty nifty hack. Not only does it add volume to your hair, it also changes your whole look. I normally part my hair straight down the middle but when I'm looking to shake things up I do either a deep left or right part and I am a new woman. I've found that parting your hair changes your whole face shape and depending on what style you're going for can really complete a look. If I'm feeling edgy I love to rock a deep side part as my hair looks lifted and a little bit wild (in a good way). I've done a little bit of a snoop on the internet and found a good article with a few ways to change your part and a video from Milabu because she is absolutely amazing when it comes to hair. Click here if you'd like to check the article out and here if you'd like to watch the video.
In my youth I remember reading an article about why switching parts regularly is beneficial to your hair. Apparently, and I have no clue how true this is, the side of your head which the part is going away from has (obviously) less hair on that side and is more open to damaging weather exposure. It may not be true but it does make sense that it would get more damaged, due to its lack of protection. Just something to think about!
So I would rate this hack 5/5 stars because it is so easy and requires no commitment whatsoever. There's also soooo many ways to part your hair so it can be extra fun experimenting with all the looks!
This has nothing to do with a hack but I would also just like to warn against using coconut oil in thin hair. I tried this when coconut oil was all the rage and I was washing my hair everyday for a week trying to remove it. It looked like I had Vaseline in my hair for days. Not a pretty look. Don't do it thin-haired gals.
I hope you liked my first review. Please feel free to follow me on instagram and contact me with anything else you would like reviewed. Whilst establishing this blog I'll be posting once a week every Friday reviewing something new. I'm going to be reviewing everything from makeup and clothes to books and recipes so like I said, please leave a comment or message with what you would like reviewed. Much love to all and Godspeed!
